Elmhurst lies in DuPage County west of Chicago. From above it is a nearly perfect Midwestern grid. Long straight streets are lined with houses, parks are spaced through the neighbourhoods, and the Union Pacific West Metra line cuts diagonally across. Salt Creek winds along the western side, and interstates frame the edges.
The city grew as a commuter suburb, and its downtown around the station and York Street remains the centre of daily life. Elmhurst University occupies a leafy campus near the middle of town. The Elmhurst Art Museum includes the McCormick House, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
