Te mapa
Elmira grew along the Chemung River, and the river still organises the city on the map. It runs east to west through the middle, crossed by several bridges, with a downtown grid on the northern bank and residential neighbourhoods spreading across both sides of the valley floor before the land rises into wooded hills.
The street pattern is a fairly regular grid in the centre, loosening into curving roads on the hillsides. Interstate 86 runs along the valley to the north, and the campus of Elmira College forms a distinct cluster near the centre. Parks and cemeteries appear as generous open spaces among the blocks.
Mark Twain spent many summers writing at Quarry Farm, above the city, and he is buried in Elmira’s Woodlawn Cemetery. The nearby Harris Hill is known for gliding and soaring. An Elmira map poster captures the valley city behind those stories, held between river and hills.
The river divides the city into north and south, a wide curve crossed by bridges that gives the whole map its central axis.
North of the river, the historic downtown and surrounding streets follow a regular grid, dense and orderly compared with the hill roads beyond.
The cemetery where Mark Twain is buried forms a large open area of curving paths on the north side of the city.

Koteā ko Elmira
Elmira means something to its residents, to Elmira College alumni and to readers who know the city through Mark Twain. The river and grid make a balanced composition that suits a study, a library corner or a hallway.
