Esperantinópolis is a municipality in central Maranhão, in Brazil's north-east, well inland from the state's Atlantic coast. The town itself is compact: a grid of streets around a central area, with roads extending into the surrounding countryside, where farms and small communities are scattered across the land. The name combines esperança, the Portuguese word for hope, with the Greek-derived ending for city, a way of forming names found in many Brazilian towns.
