Estrela lies in the Taquari Valley of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, on the bank of the Taquari River opposite Lajeado. On a map the river is the main feature: a broad, curving band of water along one side of the town, with a regular grid of streets stretching back from it toward the hills.
The valley was settled in the nineteenth century largely by German immigrants, and that heritage is still visible in the region's family names, churches and farming. Estrela has long had a working relationship with the river, which serves as both a transport route and the defining edge of the town.
An Estrela map poster places the Taquari at the heart of the composition. The water curves across the frame, the bridge crosses it toward Lajeado, and the orderly blocks of Estrela fill the space beside it. The contrast between the smooth river and the square grid makes a strong, clean print.
