Te mapa
Gáldar lies on the northwest corner of Gran Canaria. The old town sits on a slope between the Atlantic and the rounded volcanic mountain that shares its name. From above, the historic centre forms a tight knot of streets around the main square and church. Newer neighbourhoods and plantations spread out below it toward the rocky coast and the fishing village of Sardina.
Before the Castilian conquest in the fifteenth century, Gáldar was one of the main seats of the island's indigenous rulers. The Cueva Pintada, a cave decorated with geometric paintings and surrounded by the remains of a pre-Hispanic settlement, is now an archaeological museum in the middle of town. Few places in the Canaries have kept that earlier past so visible.
A Gáldar map poster captures a contrast that is easy to see in black and white. On one side is the dense, irregular street pattern of the old town. On the other are the smooth contours of the mountain and the long, broken line of the coast. The map works as a record of a town that looks both inland and out to sea.
The volcanic cone rising directly behind the town gives the map a strong, rounded landmark. The streets climb partway up its lower slopes.
Narrow streets converge on the main square and the church of Santiago. It is a compact, irregular core that reflects the town's early importance.
A rugged shore with small coves and the harbour at Sardina del Norte. It forms the map's western edge and faces the open Atlantic.

Koteā ko Gáldar
Visitors to Gran Canaria often remember the north for its quieter towns and wild coast, and Gáldar is one of the most distinctive of them. A map of it suits islanders, returning travellers and anyone drawn to Canarian history.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be changed to mark a stay, a wedding or a family home. Pick from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand in particular echoes the island's volcanic light.
