Te mapa
Gapyeong is a mountainous county in Gyeonggi-do, northeast of Seoul. From above, the Bukhan River is the main feature: it winds through the valley in wide bends and widens into Cheongpyeong Lake, a reservoir created by a dam. The county town sits where the Gapyeong stream meets the river, with steep, forested hills all around.
The county is a popular getaway from Seoul. Nami Island, a small wooded island in the river, became widely known through the television drama Winter Sonata. The Gyeongchun Line railway follows the river valley and links the area to Seoul and Chuncheon.
Gapyeong is also known for the Battle of Kapyong in 1951, when Commonwealth troops held the valley during the Korean War. A Gapyeong map poster brings together the river's curves, the island, the lake and the narrow valley roads in a composition led by water and mountains.
The river loops through the county in broad curves, the dominant line on the map, crossed by bridges and followed by road and rail.
The small leaf-shaped island sits in the river near the town and is one of the most recognisable features on the poster.
Upstream of a dam, the river widens into a winding reservoir, whose irregular shores add intricate detail to the southern part of the map.
