Te mapa
Gastonia is the seat of Gaston County in the Piedmont of North Carolina, about twenty miles west of Charlotte. Its map shows a compact downtown grid tied to the railway, with Interstate 85 cutting across the south of the city and suburbs spreading in loops and cul-de-sacs toward the gently rolling countryside.
The city grew around cotton mills in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the villages built for mill workers still show as small clusters of regular streets around the older factory sites. The 1929 Loray Mill strike made Gastonia a landmark in American labour history, and the vast Loray Mill building has since been restored for housing and shops.
A Gastonia map poster brings out that patchwork of grids. Rail lines slice through the centre, the interstate adds a strong sweeping line, and to the west Crowders Mountain begins to lift the land. It is a map that rewards close looking, with each neighbourhood holding its own small pattern.
Former company neighbourhoods appear as tight rectangles of short streets and uniform lots, scattered around the city where textile mills once stood.
The rail line through downtown shaped the original grid, and its long straight course remains one of the clearest lines on the map.
The interstate sweeps across the southern part of the city with broad interchanges, separating the older core from newer commercial and residential areas.

Koteā ko Gastonia
Gastonia has deep family roots for many people in the Carolinas, often going back to the mills. A map of the city is a way to mark where a family lived and worked, or where someone bought a first house.
