Gokak is in Belagavi district in northern Karnataka, on the Deccan plateau near the Ghataprabha River. From above the town forms a dense core of streets, with roads leading out across dry farmland and low hills. To the west the river drops over sandstone at Gokak Falls, one of the better known waterfalls in the state.
The town is also known for Gokak toys, lightweight wooden figures carved and painted by local craftsmen, and for a long-established textile mill near the falls. Farmland, sugarcane fields and rocky ridges surround the town, and the river gorge gives the landscape a sharp, clear line.
