Te mapa
Grays is the main town of Thurrock in Essex, on the north bank of the Thames east of London. The river is the dominant feature of the map, wide and tidal, sweeping past the town's southern edge. Across the water lies Kent, and upstream to the west, the Dartford Crossing carries the M25 over the estuary.
The town grew with the river trade and with chalk quarrying. The old quarries left deep hollows in the landscape, some now flooded as lakes, others built over, and they appear on the map as unusual open shapes among the streets. The railway line to London runs along the riverside, and the town centre sits just north of it.
A Grays map poster shows the character of the Thames estuary: a broad river, a working waterfront, rail and road lines running east to west, and residential streets climbing gently inland. It is a strong composition, with the river giving it a clear horizontal anchor.
The river runs along the southern edge of the town, wide and tidal, taking up a large part of the frame and separating Essex from Kent.
Former chalk quarries left deep hollows around the town, some filled with water, which appear as irregular open shapes breaking up the street pattern.
The rail line to London runs close to the Thames, a firm straight line between the waterfront and the town centre just to the north.

Koteā ko Grays
Grays has long been home to families who moved out from East London, as well as those who have lived by the estuary for generations. A map of the town and the river is a warm, personal reminder of where home is.
