Te mapa
Hadleigh sits on higher ground between Benfleet and Leigh-on-Sea, looking out over the wide mouth of the Thames. The main road through town runs east–west along the ridge, and the residential streets spread out on either side in the curving closes and crescents typical of twentieth-century suburbs. To the south the land drops sharply, and the map changes from dense housing to open green space and salt marsh.
That southern slope holds Hadleigh Castle, a thirteenth-century ruin that John Constable painted in a famous study of the estuary. Around it, Hadleigh Country Park covers the hillside. Hadleigh Farm, next door, hosted the mountain bike events of the London 2012 Olympics. Below them, creeks and marshes lead out toward the tidal river.
A Hadleigh map poster captures this clear division. Suburban streets pack the top half of the frame, and the lower half opens into park, marsh and water, with the railway line running along the foot of the slope. It is a rare suburban map with an estuary for a horizon.
The ruined castle stands on the slope above the marshes. Its footprint sits alone in open land, a small but meaningful mark between town and estuary.
A wide band of open parkland and farmland separates the town from the Thames. It gives the map a large, calm area of negative space.
Creeks, marshland and the Thames estuary form the southern boundary. Irregular natural lines here contrast with the orderly suburban closes above.
