Te mapa
Hayama is a small town on the western side of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa, facing Sagami Bay just south of Zushi and Kamakura. On a map, the coastline is its defining feature: a series of small beaches, rocky points and coves, with the town squeezed into the narrow strip between sea and steep, wooded hills. Inland, green space outweighs streets.
Roads follow the shore and push up the valleys in thin, winding lines, while residential lanes fill the lower slopes. The hills behind are largely forest, which leaves wide open areas on the map. The result is a composition in three bands: the smooth sea, a thin strip of dense streets, and the quiet upland beyond.
Hayama is home to the Hayama Imperial Villa, and it is often called the birthplace of yachting in Japan. On clear days the coast looks across the bay to Enoshima and Mount Fuji. A Hayama map poster shows a seaside town held between water and forest.
The shore breaks into small beaches, rocky headlands and harbours, giving the poster an irregular, finely detailed coastline.
A main road follows the water closely, the one continuous line connecting the town's beaches and neighbourhoods from north to south.
Behind the coast, forested hills leave broad open areas on the map, with only a few roads winding up the valleys.

Koteā ko Hayama
Sailors, weekend residents from Tokyo and people who grew up on the Miura Peninsula often feel a strong attachment to Hayama. The composition of sea, shore and hills looks calm and spacious on a wall.
