Te mapa
Hiratsuka faces Sagami Bay in central Kanagawa, on the low plain where the Sagami River reaches the sea. The river forms the city's eastern edge, a wide pale band on the map, while the coastline runs in a clean, gentle curve along the south. Between them lies a dense mesh of residential streets on level ground that rises only toward the hills inland.
The old Tokaido highway passes through the centre, and Hiratsuka was one of the post stations on that road between Edo and Kyoto. Today the JR Tokaido Line and the national highway follow much the same corridor, creating a strong east-west axis that anchors the composition of any Hiratsuka map poster.
The city is widely known for the Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival, held each July, when shopping streets near the station fill with tall bamboo decorations. On a map those streets are only a few short lines near the station, but they mark the busiest part of a town otherwise defined by quiet neighbourhoods and a long, open shoreline.
The broad Sagami River forms Hiratsuka's eastern boundary, a wide unmarked band that frames the dense streets and leads the eye down to the bay.
Railway and highway run side by side along the line of the old post road, forming the main east-west axis through the centre of the city.
A long, smooth shoreline closes the southern edge of the map, contrasting with the fine, irregular street pattern of the residential districts inland.
