Te mapa
Hikiso is a community in Nara Prefecture, on the western side of the Nara Basin, one of the oldest settled landscapes in Japan. This part of the basin lies within reach of both Osaka and the city of Nara. Over recent decades, commuter housing has spread across much of its farmland, while older village cores remain among the new streets.
On a map, the result is a patchwork. Narrow, irregular lanes mark the older villages, while planned housing estates bring more regular blocks and curving roads. Rectangular rice fields and irrigation ponds remain between them, and small rivers cross the flat land toward the Yamato River. The wider basin is also known for ancient kofun burial mounds, which are a familiar feature of its landscape.
A Hikiso map poster records that meeting of old and new: the fine grain of village lanes, the broader pattern of modern streets and the geometric fields still farmed between them. It is a quiet, detailed image, well suited to people from the area and to anyone with a connection to the Nara Basin.
Older settlement cores keep their narrow, winding lanes. On the poster they appear as tight clusters of fine lines among the newer streets.
Rice paddies and irrigation ponds remain between the built-up areas. Their regular shapes give the map a calm geometric background typical of the Nara Basin.
Planned residential areas add neat blocks and gently curving roads. They show how the basin has grown as a place to live within reach of Osaka and Nara.

Maps like this appeal to people who know the area day to day: the walk to the station, the lane past the fields, the view across the basin. Framed, the ordinary route home becomes a picture worth keeping.
