Te mapa
Hongbao lies in south-eastern Gansu, in the hilly loess country of the Tianshui area, where the Loess Plateau begins to break up into valleys. From above, the town keeps to the flatter land of the valley, with streets and buildings arranged in a long band. On either side, the slopes rise in terraces and gullies, cut into the soft yellow soil.
The loess landscape is one of the most distinctive in China. Centuries of farming have shaped the hillsides into terraces, and water has carved deep, branching ravines. On a map this gives a strong contrast between the orderly town and the intricate, almost tree-like patterns of the land around it.
A Hongbao map poster captures a town shaped by its valley. The main road and river run along the bottom, the streets pack in close to them, and the frame fills with the finely branched lines of the hills. It is a detailed, unusual print of a part of China few maps show.
The built-up area stretches along the flat valley bottom, forming a long, narrow shape rather than a compact centre.
Around the town, erosion has cut branching ravines into the hillsides, which appear as fine, tree-like patterns on the map.
Farmland climbs the hills in terraces, giving the slopes a layered texture that surrounds the town on both sides.
