Te mapa
Hpākān lies in Myanmar's Kachin State, in a valley along the Uru river surrounded by forested hills. It is known worldwide as the centre of jade mining, and the landscape around the town has been dramatically reshaped. On a map, the settlement appears as a cluster of roads and buildings bordered by extensive excavated ground.
The jade mines here produce much of the world's jadeite, and the scale of extraction is visible from space as large terraced pits and spoil heaps. The industry has also brought serious risks, including deadly landslides at mine sites, which have drawn international attention to working conditions in the area.
A Hpākān map poster presents the town's unusual form: a road network running along the valley, irregular settlement pockets, and the broad, open areas left by mining. In black and white the result is stark and unlike any typical town plan.
Large excavated zones surround the town, drawn as broad open spaces that dominate the map and reflect the scale of jade extraction.
The town follows the valley of the Uru river, with roads and settlements laid out along its course between the surrounding hills.
A main road runs through the valley, linking scattered settlements and mining sites, forming the backbone of the town's layout.
