Te mapa
Huamachuco lies high in the Andes of the La Libertad region in northern Peru, at an altitude of over 3,000 metres. On a map, the town has the classic Spanish colonial layout, with a regular grid of streets around a central Plaza de Armas. Beyond the grid, the terrain rises quickly and roads start to twist their way up into the mountains.
The area has a long history. Above the town stands Marcahuamachuco, a large pre-Inca archaeological complex on a hilltop plateau. Huamachuco is also known as the site of an 1883 battle during the War of the Pacific. Today the town is a market and administrative centre for the surrounding highland communities.
A Huamachuco map poster shows how geometry meets mountain terrain. The central blocks are orderly and even, while the roads that leave the town follow valleys and ridges in winding lines. It is a clear, strong composition, with a regular core and a much looser, more irregular landscape around it.
The main square sits at the centre of the colonial grid and is unusually spacious. On the poster, it appears as an open block from which the surrounding streets are laid out.
Straight streets cross at right angles and form regular blocks in the centre. Toward the edges, the grid starts to adapt to the terrain and becomes less even.
A road climbs from the town toward the hilltop archaeological site. Its bends show how steep the terrain becomes just beyond the built-up area.

Koteā ko Huamachuco
Huamachuco appeals to people with family in the northern Peruvian highlands and to travellers who have visited Marcahuamachuco. The clear grid in its mountain setting makes it a distinctive map, different from coastal Peruvian cities.
