Huwei lies in the rural, hilly east of Chongqing Municipality in southwestern China, in the wider basin of the Yangtze. The terrain here is steep and broken, and settlements fit themselves into the few flatter areas between ridges.
That terrain shapes everything on the map. The town's streets run along valley floors or along the contours of the slopes, and roads between villages wind in tight curves. A Huwei map poster shows this pattern with streets packed into narrow spaces and everything else given over to hills.
