Te mapa
Iijima sits on the broad, flat plain of northern Fukui Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu. From above, the landscape is mostly rice fields, divided into neat rectangles by irrigation channels and farm roads. Houses cluster along the main roads in small groups, and the built-up areas form islands in the fields.
The plain is one of the main farming areas of the Hokuriku region, where heavy winter snow gives way to green paddies in summer. Rivers cross the plain on their way to the sea, and rail lines and regional roads cut straight across the grid of fields. Further inland, the mountains rise at the edge of the lowland.
An Iijima map poster is really a portrait of Japanese rural geometry. Tight house plots, straight field boundaries and small winding lanes between them create a pattern that is calm and orderly. It suits a minimal print well, and it will mean a great deal to anyone with roots in this corner of Fukui.
Rice fields are laid out in regular rectangles bounded by channels and farm roads, a clean geometric pattern that fills much of the frame.
Houses gather in compact groups along the older roads, forming dense islands of small plots amid the open fields.
The wide lowland of northern Fukui gives the map a flat, open character, with straight roads and rail lines crossing it.

Koteā ko Iijima
For people who grew up among these fields and later moved to Osaka, Tokyo or abroad, a map of Iijima is a way to keep the home landscape close. It also works simply as a calm, graphic piece for a modern room.
