Ivoti is a small city in Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, a short drive north of Novo Hamburgo. The area was settled in the nineteenth century by German immigrants, and that heritage is still visible, especially in the preserved half-timbered houses that the town looks after as part of its identity.
The terrain gives Ivoti its shape. It sits on rolling hills, so the streets curve along slopes and down into small valleys instead of following a regular grid. The centre is compact, and residential streets extend along ridges into green, partly wooded surroundings. A highway passes nearby, linking the town to the metropolitan region around Porto Alegre.
