Te mapa
Jiujiang lies on the southern bank of the Yangtze in northern Jiangxi, close to where Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake, drains into the river at Hukou. From above, the Yangtze forms a wide boundary along the north of the city, and bridges carry road and rail traffic across it toward Hubei.
Inside the city, two lakes break up the streets. Gantang Lake and Nanmen Lake sit near the centre, surrounded by walking paths and small causeways. They give a Jiujiang map poster a distinctive shape: dense blocks along the river, open water at the centre and newer districts spreading south and east beyond it.
To the south rises Lushan, a mountain range with steep slopes and a long history of poetry, painting and retreats. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the map, the city's southern edge gives way to the lines of the mountain roads. The river port and the Xunyang Tower on the waterfront recall the city's long importance as a trading stop on the Yangtze.
The broad river forms the northern edge of the city. Waterfront districts line the bank, and large bridges cross toward the northern shore.
Gantang Lake and Nanmen Lake create open water in the middle of the city. Causeways and paths cross and surround them.
South of the city, roads climb into the Lushan range. The mountain area is known for its steep scenery and centuries of poetry and painting.
