Te mapa
Kalamazoo sits in southwest Michigan, roughly halfway between Detroit and Chicago, where the Kalamazoo River bends north on its way to Lake Michigan. The downtown grid lies just west of the river, and from there streets spread out gradually across a landscape of low hills, small lakes and quiet residential neighbourhoods.
In 1959 the city closed part of Burdick Street to traffic and created the Kalamazoo Mall, one of the first pedestrian shopping streets in the United States. Nearby Bronson Park forms a green block at the civic centre. To the west, Western Michigan University spreads over hills beside Kalamazoo College, which occupies a smaller hilltop campus of its own.
The city is also known for the Kalamazoo Promise, which since 2005 has covered college tuition for graduates of its public schools, and for the guitars once made here by Gibson. A Kalamazoo map poster brings together the river, the grid and the campuses, a layout that feels both orderly and relaxed.

Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College sit on hills west of downtown, their curving drives and quads contrasting with the straight streets below.
The river loops along the eastern side of the city, passing old industrial land and parks before continuing north toward Lake Michigan.
