Kameda-honchō is the historic centre of Kameda, now part of Niigata city's Kōnan ward, on the wide, low-lying Echigo plain. From above, the land is completely flat and ruled by water. Rivers, drainage canals and irrigation lines cross the rice fields in straight or gently curving lines, and the town sits among them as a dense, compact grid.
Kameda was a market town and became known for a striped cotton fabric called Kameda-jima. Today its name is best known across Japan through the rice cracker maker Kameda Seika, which was founded here. The fields around it are part of one of the country's most important rice-growing regions.
