Kanash grew up around the railway in the Chuvash Republic, and the tracks still dominate its map. Several lines meet here, forming a wide band of sidings and yards that divides the town. Residential neighbourhoods sit on either side in a mostly regular pattern of streets and blocks. From above, the effect is orderly and strongly linear.
