Te mapa
Katima Mulilo is the capital of Namibia's Zambezi Region, located near the eastern end of the long, narrow strip of land once known as the Caprivi Strip. The town lies on the south bank of the Zambezi River, which forms the border with Zambia here. From above, the river is the dominant feature, a broad channel with islands and floodplains.
The town's streets spread back from the river in a loose grid, with the main road leading west toward the rest of Namibia. A bridge over the Zambezi, opened in the early 2000s, links Katima Mulilo with Zambia and forms part of a major trade corridor. The name is often explained as a reference to the rapids that break the river nearby.
A Katima Mulilo map poster suits people who grew up in the Zambezi Region, those who worked here, and travellers who crossed the river on their way through southern Africa. The composition is striking: a sweeping river with islands and floodplain, a compact town on its bank, and roads striking out across flat land.
The river curves past the town with islands, channels and wide floodplain, forming a strong, organic edge along one whole side of the map.
The road bridge crossing to Zambia appears as a clean, straight line over the water, a small but meaningful detail in the composition.
Streets spread back from the riverbank in a loose grid, with markets, offices and homes forming the densest area before the land opens out.
