Kenosha sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan, in the southeast corner of Wisconsin. The lakefront defines its eastern edge on the map, with a harbour, breakwaters and Simmons Island near downtown. From there, a mostly regular grid of streets extends west across flat land, interrupted by rail lines, parks and the Pike River toward the north of the city.
The city was long an automobile manufacturing centre, home to Nash Motors and later American Motors and Chrysler plants. Today its lakefront includes HarborPark, museums and a restored electric streetcar loop, and the Metra line connects it to Chicago. Its position between two large metropolitan areas has made it both a commuter town and a city in its own right.
