Te mapa
Kiruna sits in Swedish Lapland, well north of the Arctic Circle, and exists because of iron ore. The town was built around the Kirunavaara mountain, where the state-owned company LKAB operates one of the world's largest underground iron-ore mines. On a map the town lies between Kirunavaara and the lake Luossajärvi, with the smaller Luossavaara hill to the north.
Mining has made the ground beneath the old town unstable, so Kiruna is being relocated. A new city centre has been built a few kilometres to the east, and historic buildings, including the well-known wooden Kiruna Church, are being moved or rebuilt there. The map is therefore changing, with streets disappearing on one side and new ones appearing on the other.
A Kiruna map poster records a town in the middle of that transition. The lake, the mountains, the mine and the streets between them make an unusual composition. Around it, the frame fades into open subarctic land, a reminder of how remote the place is.
The iron-ore mountain and its huge underground mine dominate the south-western side of the map, and they are the reason the town was founded.
Ground deformation from mining is moving Kiruna east, where a new centre has been built and historic buildings are being relocated.
The lake lies between the town and the ore mountain, a calm, open shape surrounded by roads, rail lines and industrial land.

Koteā ko Kiruna
Kiruna attracts people who have seen the midnight sun, the northern lights or the mine, and those who grew up in the old town that is now being moved. A map preserves that street pattern at a specific moment.
Add a title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the year you visited or the year your old street was cleared. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand as print-ready files or a printed poster.
