Konstantinovsk lies in Rostov Oblast on the right bank of the Don, in the stretch of the river between Volgodonsk and Rostov-on-Don. The town rises from the water up a steep bank, and from above its streets run in a mostly regular grid parallel to and away from the river, with the broad floodplain and wooded islands on the opposite side.
The town began as the Cossack stanitsa of Konstantinovskaya and became a town in the twentieth century. The Don here is part of a major inland waterway, and a hydroelectric complex with a navigation lock stands on the river nearby, one of several that keep the lower Don navigable for ships travelling between the Volga and the Sea of Azov.
