Te mapa
Kostomuksha lies in the west of the Republic of Karelia, a short distance from the Finnish border. On a map the town is a neat, planned settlement surrounded by forest and countless lakes, with the large Kontokki lake close by. Wide streets and regular blocks of flats form a clear plan. The surrounding landscape is a scattered pattern of water, bog and pine.
The town was built from the late 1970s to serve a huge iron-ore mining and processing plant. Its construction was carried out with major participation from Finnish builders, which influenced its architecture and layout. The open-pit mine and its tailings areas are large, clearly shaped features on the map. The Kostomuksha Nature Reserve protects forest and lakes further toward the border.
A Kostomuksha map poster sets a regular modern town against the irregular northern landscape. The grid of residential districts, the shapes of the mine and the maze of lakes and forest all read clearly in black and white. It suits people who grew up here, mine workers and their families and travellers who crossed the border through this part of Karelia.
The residential districts follow a regular, carefully planned layout, clearly different from the organic shapes of the surrounding lakes.
The large iron-ore quarry and its associated works form bold industrial shapes near the town, which define its economy.
Lakes of all sizes scatter across the map around the town. Their outlines create a complex pattern in the forested landscape.

Koteā ko Kostomuksha
The poster suits people for whom Kostomuksha is tied to their parents' work or their own childhood in a young northern town. The contrast between the planned streets and the wild lakes makes a strong, distinctive print.
You can edit the title, subtitle and coordinates line, adding a family name or a year of arrival. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the lake pattern particularly well.
