Te mapa
Kousséri lies in Cameroon's Far North Region, on the western bank of the Logone River. N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, sits just across the water. A bridge links the two cities, and on a map they appear almost as one urban area, divided only by the river and the border. The confluence of the Logone and the Chari lies just to the north.
The town's streets spread across flat, low ground shaped by seasonal flooding. On the map the river's meanders, sandbanks and floodplains form wide, soft shapes. The built-up area reads as a looser grid of roads and compounds. Beyond the town, the land opens into Sahelian plains that stretch toward Lake Chad.
A Kousséri map poster also recalls a notable moment in the region's past. The Battle of Kousséri in 1900 saw the death of the warlord Rabih az-Zubayr. It was a turning point in the colonial history of the Lake Chad basin. Today the town is known above all for its role as a crossroads between Cameroon and Chad.
The river runs along the town's eastern edge and forms the international border with Chad, a winding line that divides two neighbouring cities.
The crossing to the Chadian capital appears as a short, decisive line across the water, one of the key links in the region.
Just north of town the Logone meets the Chari, and the joined waters continue toward Lake Chad through the flat Sahelian plain.
