Kristiansund is built on several islands on the edge of the Norwegian Sea, in Møre og Romsdal. The islands surround a natural harbour enclosed by land on almost every side. From above, the town is a cluster of rocky islands separated by narrow sounds. Bridges tie them together, and streets climb their slopes.
For centuries the town lived from klippfisk, cod that is salted and dried on the rocks. It became one of the leading exporters of this fish to southern Europe. Bombing in 1940 destroyed much of the centre, and it was rebuilt after the war. As a result, parts of the town have a clearly modern post-war street plan.
The Sundbåten harbour ferry crosses between the islands and is often counted among the oldest continuously operating public transport routes in the world. A Kristiansund map poster shows why the ferry exists. Water sits at the centre of everything, and the town's separate neighbourhoods form a ring around the harbour.

Narrow sounds divide the islands, and the bridges across them form short, bold links on the poster between otherwise separate parts of town.
Because it was rebuilt after 1940, the centre has a more regular, modern layout than older Norwegian coastal towns, with straighter streets and larger blocks.
