Te mapa
Ksar is one of the districts of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, and it is where the city began. Before Nouakchott was chosen as the capital around independence, a small ksar, or fortified settlement, stood here. On the modern map, Ksar is a part of the regular city grid, with blocks laid out on flat, sandy ground a few kilometres inland from the Atlantic.
For decades the district was home to the city's international airport. The runway still shows on the map as a long, straight strip, one of the largest single shapes in the city, and the open land around it separates Ksar from neighbouring districts. Beyond the streets, the texture changes to sand and dunes.
A Ksar map poster shows a young capital on the edge of the Sahara: rectangular blocks, broad straight roads and the unmistakable line of the old runway, all on open ground. It is a spare, graphic image with plenty of empty space.
The long straight strip of the former airport cuts across the map, the most striking single line in the district and a reminder of its past role.
Ksar's streets follow the regular blocks laid out as Nouakchott grew, forming a clear, even pattern on the flat ground.
Where the streets thin out, open sand and dunes take over, giving the poster wide blank areas that emphasise the built grid.

For Mauritanians and for anyone who has lived in Nouakchott, Ksar is where the capital started. A map of its grid and the old runway is a meaningful piece for a home or office, especially far from the Sahel.
