Te mapa
Kumakura lies in the south of Fukushima Prefecture, in the upland country near Shirakawa. The land here rises west toward the mountains on the border with Tochigi. The landscape consists of low hills, river valleys and rice fields, and settlement tends to follow the flatter ground next to roads and watercourses.
From above, the pattern is loose and organic. Roads follow valley floors and hug the edges of hills, and houses gather along them in small clusters. Paddies fill the flat land in between, and the surrounding slopes stay forested. The resulting street network is sparse and meandering, very different from the dense grids of Japanese cities.
A Kumakura map poster shows rural Tohoku at its simplest. There are few streets and a lot of open space, shaped by terrain rather than planning. For people with roots here, the simplicity of the lines is the point: it shows home as a set of familiar routes through quiet country.
The main roads follow the valleys and the easiest gradients. They wind gently between hills and give the map a soft, flowing structure.
Homes and farms gather in small groups along the roads, not in one dense centre. On the print they appear as quiet points spread across the landscape.
Wide spaces without streets mark fields, forest and hills. That emptiness is part of the composition and emphasises the rural character of the area.

Some of the most meaningful maps are of small places. This print is for anyone who grew up in the countryside around Shirakawa or has family ties to it, and wants a quiet reminder of those roads.
