Te mapa
Kunashir Island is the southernmost large island of the Kuril chain, just off the northeastern coast of Hokkaido. It is long and narrow, stretching from northeast to southwest, with volcanoes rising at intervals along its length. Its sovereignty is disputed: Russia administers the island, and Japan claims it as part of Hokkaido.
Kunashir is volcanic from end to end. In the north rises Tyatya, called Chachadake in Japanese, a tall, symmetrical cone. In the south, the Golovnin caldera holds lakes within its rim. On the coast, Cape Stolbchaty is known for columns of basalt that formed as lava cooled and cracked into regular shapes.
A Kunashir Island map poster shows a coastline of long beaches and headlands, a sparse road network and one main settlement, Yuzhno-Kurilsk, on the southeastern side. Across the Nemuro Strait, the coast of Hokkaido is close enough to see on clear days, and it frames the island's western edge.
In the north, a tall volcanic cone rises near the coast, with a smaller cone inside its summit crater. It dominates the northern end of the map as a clear, roadless area.
At the southern end, a volcanic caldera holds lakes inside a ring of hills. Its rounded shape stands out clearly against the narrow outline of the rest of the island.
The main settlement sits on the southeastern coast, with a compact cluster of streets near the shore. It is the densest point on a map that is otherwise mostly coastline and forest.

Koteā ko Kunashir Island
Kunashir matters to people with personal or family ties to the island, including former residents of the southern Kurils and their descendants. It also appeals to anyone interested in volcanoes and remote northern landscapes. Its long volcanic outline has a striking, austere quality.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, so the title can read Kunashir, Kunashiri or another name that matters to you. Five styles are available, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as $9 HD files in six print sizes or as a printed poster.
