Te mapa
Kushiro lies on the southeast coast of Hokkaido, facing the Pacific Ocean. The city grew around a natural harbour at the mouth of the Kushiro River. On a map the port dominates the waterfront, with piers, breakwaters and quays set in straight lines along the shore. The centre spreads inland from the river mouth in a fairly regular grid of wide streets.
The Nusamai Bridge crosses the river near its mouth. It is known for the bronze statues along its parapets and for the view of the sunset over the harbour, a sight the city is proud of. Kushiro's cool summers and frequent sea fog, especially in the warmer months, also give it a distinctive, subdued atmosphere.
North of the city lies Kushiro Marsh, Japan's largest wetland and home to the red-crowned crane, which recovered here from near extinction. On a map, the marsh appears as a vast area of meandering streams and open ground. A Kushiro map poster brings together the grid of the port city and the wild, winding lines of the wetland beyond.
Long breakwaters and straight quays extend into the Pacific along the city's coast, forming bold geometric lines against the smooth edge of the open sea.
The bridge crosses the Kushiro River close to where it meets the harbour, a short, central span linking the two halves of the old downtown.
A vast wetland north of the city, threaded with slow, meandering streams. The red-crowned crane lives and nests here in protected habitat.
