Te mapa
Asahikawa sits in the Kamikawa Basin in central Hokkaido, a flat valley enclosed by mountains, and water defines it on the map. The Ishikari, Hokkaido's longest river, is joined here by the Chūbetsu, Biei and Ushishubetsu rivers. Broad channels with wide flood banks cut the city into sections, and a large number of bridges connect them.
The streets follow the planned grid typical of Hokkaido's Meiji-era settlements, with numbered blocks running off a long central avenue from the railway station. In 1972 part of that avenue, Heiwa-dōri, became Japan's first permanent pedestrian shopping street. Asahikawa also holds the country's official record low temperature, minus 41 degrees Celsius, set in 1902.
On the eastern edge, Asahiyama Zoo has become one of the most visited zoos in Japan, known for enclosures designed around how the animals behave. An Asahikawa map poster brings together the grid, the rivers and the open land at the edges of the basin in a calm arrangement of line and space.
Several rivers meet the Ishikari within the city limits. Their wide, embanked channels cross the map in long curves and split the urban area into distinct districts.
The pedestrian shopping street runs north from the station along the main axis of the grid. It is a straight line through the densest part of the centre.
The rebuilt station sits right beside the Chūbetsu River, with green riverside space behind it. The railway and the water share the southern edge of downtown.

Koteā ko Asahikawa
Asahikawa is home ground for many people in northern Japan, and a winter memory for visitors who came for the snow, the ramen or the zoo. Its rivers and grid make a strong graphic image. It is clean enough for a minimalist room and precise enough for finding a familiar street.
