Te mapa
Obihiro is the centre of the Tokachi plain in eastern Hokkaido, one of Japan's main agricultural regions. The city sits just south of the Tokachi River where the Satsunai River joins it. From above, the downtown is a very regular grid of wide streets, and beyond it the countryside is divided into huge rectangular fields, also aligned to the grid.
The town was founded by settlers in the 1880s, and its planned layout reflects that late, deliberate start. Around the station the blocks are compact and orderly, while parks and riverside green space loosen the pattern at the edges. On clear days the Hidaka Mountains are visible to the west, although they lie beyond the frame of a city map.
Obihiro is known for ban'ei, a form of horse racing in which heavy draft horses pull sleds over sand ramps. The city's racecourse is the last place where it is still held. An Obihiro map poster shows a calm, measured layout: rivers along the north, the grid in the middle and fields all around.
Wide, evenly spaced streets divide central Obihiro into regular blocks, a layout typical of Hokkaido's planned settlements and very striking in monochrome.
The two rivers meet on the city's northern side, their broad banks and green floodplains forming a soft, curving edge to the grid.
Outside the centre, large rectangular farm plots continue the city's orientation across the plain, like a ruled sheet of paper.
