Te mapa
Otaru occupies a narrow strip of coast on the Sea of Japan side of Hokkaido, west of Sapporo, where the hills come down close to the water. The map is long and thin. Streets run parallel to the shore and then climb in short, steep lines up the slopes behind. Breakwaters and piers reach out into Ishikari Bay and frame the harbour that made the town important.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Otaru was one of Hokkaido's main ports and a financial centre, supported by herring fishing and shipping. The Otaru Canal was finished in 1923 to move goods between ships and the stone warehouses along its bank. Part of it survives, still lined with those warehouses, and its gentle curve near the harbour is easy to trace on a map.
Behind the old centre the land rises toward Mount Tengu, whose slopes hold a ski area and a lookout over the bay. An Otaru map poster captures the sharp contrast between a flat, dense waterfront and the hillside neighbourhoods above it. The coastline runs across the whole sheet as its dominant line.

Long breakwaters and angular piers push out into Ishikari Bay. They give the coastline a crisp, geometric edge that contrasts with the organic shapes of the hills behind.
Streets rise steeply from the waterfront toward Mount Tengu and the surrounding slopes, and their winding lines fill the upper half of the map with fine detail.

Koteā ko Otaru
Many people remember Otaru from a winter trip, a walk along the canal or a day away from Sapporo. Its compact coastal shape is easy to recognise on a wall, even for visitors who spent only a single afternoon there.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps the date of the trip, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint suits the harbour lines particularly well, while Paper brings out the old town's quieter character.
