Te mapa
Kyakhta lies in the Republic of Buryatia, right on Russia's border with Mongolia, across from the Mongolian town of Altanbulag. It was founded in the eighteenth century as a trading post after the 1727 Treaty of Kyakhta between the Russian and Qing empires. For more than a century it was the main overland gateway for Chinese tea and other goods travelling into Russia.
The trade brought wealth, and the town gained merchant houses, a large cathedral and a regular street plan. For a long time the main town was known as Troitskosavsk. On the map, Kyakhta's grid fills a valley among low hills. The streets run out to the border crossing, and open steppe stretches in every direction.
A Kyakhta map poster draws the line of a frontier town that once linked two empires. The border is always present in its layout. Printed in fine monochrome lines, the old trading grid and the open land around it make a spare, atmospheric image with a clear sense of distance.
The town reaches right up to the Mongolian frontier, and the road and crossing point to Altanbulag are an unusual and defining feature of the map.
The regular street plan dates from Kyakhta's years as a tea-trade hub, when wealthy merchants built the town around orderly blocks and squares.
Low hills and open grassland surround the town. On the poster they appear as wide empty space, underlining how remote the settlement is.

Kyakhta interests people who care about history, trade routes and borderlands, as well as those with family ties to Buryatia. A map of this old tea-road crossing sits well in a study or library, where it quietly prompts questions.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the town's old name or a travel date. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as a digital file or a printed poster.
