Te mapa
La Ligua is the capital of Petorca Province in the Valparaíso Region, set in the valley of the La Ligua River a short distance inland from the Pacific coast. The valley runs roughly east to west, flanked by dry hills, and on a map the town appears as a compact grid on the valley floor, with farmland stretching along the river in a narrow band.
The town is known throughout Chile for two traditions: its knitted woollen goods, sold in shops and stalls along the main streets, and its sweets, the dulces de La Ligua, which vendors offer to travellers on the roads nearby. Both have made the name familiar far beyond the province, even to people who have only passed by on the highway.
The Pan-American Highway runs between the town and the coast, linking La Ligua with Santiago to the south and the northern regions. A La Ligua map poster sets the regular grid of the town against the long line of the river and the shape of its valley, a clear, balanced image of a place defined by both its crafts and its setting.
The La Ligua River runs through the valley beside the town, bordered by a strip of cultivated land that stands out against the drier hills.
The town centre follows a regular grid of streets around a main square, the classic layout of Chilean towns founded in the colonial period.
Roads lead west toward the Pan-American Highway and the Pacific shore, drawing long lines across the valley that connect the town to the rest of Chile.
