Te mapa
Labytnangi lies in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, just north of the Arctic Circle, on the left bank of the Ob opposite Salekhard. The town sits where the foothills of the Polar Urals come close to the river. On the map its compact blocks occupy a strip of land beside a vast floodplain of channels, islands and lakes.
Labytnangi is reached by the railway that crosses the Polar Urals from the Pechora line, and it serves as the rail gateway for Salekhard and the wider region. Salekhard itself, the okrug's capital, is reached from here by ferry in summer and by ice road in winter. The name is usually translated from Khanty as seven larches.
A Labytnangi map poster is shaped almost entirely by water and distance. The Ob and its many branches spread across the sheet in wide, braided patterns, the town is a small dense cluster on the western bank, and the railway approaches in a long single line from the west. It is a striking portrait of life at the edge of the Arctic.
The river splits into several wide channels here, separated by islands and low wetland. The resulting pattern of water fills much of the map.
The line across the Polar Urals arrives from the west in a long, clean arc and runs into sidings and yards at the edge of the compact town.
The regional capital lies across the Ob on the opposite bank and is reached by ferry or ice road depending on the season, so the two towns face each other across open water.

Koteā ko Labytnangi
Many people come to Labytnangi to work in the North and remember it long after leaving, while others were born here and know the river crossing by heart. A map of the town is a quiet record of a place few have seen.
