Liuquan lies on the flat North China Plain, north of the city of Xuzhou in Jiangsu province. The terrain is almost level, and from above the town reads as a set of long, straight roads, with rectangular blocks of housing and industrial compounds between them. Farmland fills the gaps, divided into narrow strips that give the surroundings a fine, linear texture.
Xuzhou has long been a crossroads between north and south China, and that role shows in the transport lines that cross the wider area. Around Liuquan, highways and railway alignments run in confident straight lines, and water channels and ponds break the surface here and there. The pattern mixes planned development with older village clusters that follow their own logic.
