Luhe is a small town in southern Gansu, in the folded hill country where the province gives way to the Qinling ranges. From above, the settlement follows a valley floor, and its streets are packed onto the narrow strip of level ground beside the watercourse. Steep slopes rise on either side, so the town grows along the valley rather than across it.
The surrounding map is dominated by relief. Village roads climb side valleys, and fields sit on terraces and small flats wherever the slope allows. The result is a network of lines that branch like a river system, with the town sitting at one of the junctions where routes and valleys meet.
