Te mapa
Lumberton is the seat of Robeson County in southeastern North Carolina, and the Lumber River defines its shape on the map. The river winds in tight meanders past the older part of town, with a regular grid of downtown streets set on the higher ground nearby. Neighbourhoods spread outward along the main roads.
The town takes its name from the river and from the timber trade that once moved along it. Interstate 95 passes along the east side of Lumberton, and the surrounding county is the heartland of the Lumbee Tribe. The flat coastal plain around town is laid out in farm fields and pine woods.
A Lumberton map poster captures the loops of the Lumber River, the rectangular downtown, the long straight line of the interstate, and the fields beyond. In black and white the meandering water becomes the natural focal point, a curving line that sets this town apart from the grid-bound places around it.
The river bends repeatedly around the town's west side, a sinuous line that dominates the map and explains where the town first grew.
The historic centre is laid out in regular blocks near the river, a small, orderly core with the county courthouse at its heart.
The highway runs in a long straight line along the east of town, with commercial development clustered around its interchanges.
