Maloyaroslavets lies in Kaluga Oblast, southwest of Moscow, on the high bank of the Luzha River. The town is best known for the Battle of Maloyaroslavets in October 1812, when Russian forces blocked Napoleon's army from retreating south, forcing it back along the devastated Smolensk road. Monuments to the battle stand throughout the town.
From above, the historic centre sits on raised ground with the river curving below it. The Nikolsky Chernoostrovsky Monastery, with its walls and domes, is close to the centre. Streets radiate from the old core, and later districts extend outward, while the railway to Kaluga and Kyiv passes along the town's edge.
A Maloyaroslavets map poster shows a compact Russian provincial town shaped by its river and its hill. The Luzha's bends define the southern side, the old streets knit together around the monastery and squares, and the newer districts fade gradually into the surrounding countryside. It is a small map with considerable history behind it.
The Luzha curves beneath the high bank on which the old town stands, a natural defensive line that also played a part in the 1812 battle.
The Nikolsky Chernoostrovsky Monastery sits near the centre, and its walled enclosure forms a clear, compact shape among the surrounding streets.
Streets branch outward from the old town on the hill, a small, irregular centre that gradually gives way to later neighbourhoods and fields.
