Te mapa
Mananara lies on the north-eastern coast of Madagascar, in the Analanjirofo region. From above, the town is a narrow settlement along the shore, where the Mananara River reaches the Indian Ocean. The coastline is mostly straight here, and the river mouth with its sandbars and lagoon edges makes the most noticeable break in it.
Inland, the ground rises quickly into green, hilly country cut by streams. Nearby, Mananara Nord National Park and the wider biosphere reserve protect coastal forest, islands and coral reefs. The area is known as a stronghold of the aye-aye, one of Madagascar's most unusual lemurs. On the map, that wild setting is clear from how little of it is built on.
A Mananara map poster shows a town defined by its edges: the ocean on one side, the river on another and forested hills behind. The street pattern itself is modest, a few main roads and lanes, but the natural boundaries around it give the print a strong, calm shape.
The Mananara River meets the ocean beside the town, with sandbars and curving banks. It is the most intricate shape on the map and gives the town its name.
A long, straight stretch of coast forms one edge of the print. In black and white, the clean line between land and sea frames the small grid of streets.
Hills and streams rise inland towards protected forest. The largely unbuilt land beyond the town shows how closely Mananara is tied to its natural surroundings.
