Maraã is a small town in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, on the Japurá River in the western Amazon basin. From above, it is a short grid of streets along the riverbank, with the forest pressing in behind. Like many Amazon towns, it faces the water, because boats are the main way to arrive and leave.
The Japurá and its side channels, lakes and seasonally flooded forests make the surrounding map far more interesting than the small town itself. On a print, the river is a wide, strong shape.
