Margherita lies in Tinsukia district in the far east of Assam, on the banks of the Burhi Dihing river. The town's name is unusual for India. It is said to honour Queen Margherita of Italy and to date from the late nineteenth century, when Italian engineers worked on the railway here. From above, the settlement follows the river and the rail line in a long, narrow band.
The surrounding area is known for tea estates and coal mining, and both shape the map. Tea gardens appear as large, regular blocks crossed by internal roads, while the mining area lies toward the hills in the east. The Burhi Dihing winds through the landscape in broad loops, with sandbars and side channels visible at scale.
