Marthandam sits in Kanyakumari district at the southern tip of Tamil Nadu, close to the Kerala border. On a map it reads as a linear town. The main highway between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari runs straight through its centre, and most of the streets gather along it. Further out they thin into small roads that wander between houses, gardens and plantations.
The town is widely known for honey. Beekeeping has long been a local livelihood, and Marthandam honey is sold across the region. The rubber, coconut and cashew country around the town also leaves its mark on the map. A long flyover carries through traffic above the old main road. From above it appears as a clean parallel stroke tracing the length of the commercial centre.
Plantation lanes
