Te mapa
Marudi sits on the Baram River in northern Sarawak, and the river dominates any map of the place. The town is a small grid of streets pressed against the bank, with the water sweeping past in broad curves. Beyond the edge of town the land turns to forest, plantations and smaller streams feeding the main channel.
For much of its history Marudi has been a trading post and a gateway to the Baram interior, reached by boat long before roads arrived. Fort Hose, built in 1901 during the Brooke era, still stands above the town and now houses a museum. The riverfront and the fort together form its historic core.
A Marudi map poster works because of the contrast between a tight little town and a large river. The streets are few and orderly, and the Baram curves across the frame as a wide, smooth band. It is a good choice for anyone who remembers arriving by water or has family roots in the Baram region.
The wide river curves past the town and fills a large part of the frame, dominating the map with its smooth bends.
A compact set of streets runs parallel to the bank, the old trading core of the town, facing directly onto the water.
The Brooke-era fort from 1901 stands on higher ground above the town. It is one of the few historic landmarks in the area.
