Milford, Connecticut, runs along Long Island Sound between New Haven and Bridgeport. Founded in 1639, it has one of the oldest town plans in the state. On the map its long coastline is the dominant feature, a series of beaches, points and small harbours with the mouth of the Housatonic River marking its western edge.
The historic centre is laid out along the Milford Green, an unusually long town green, with the Wepawaug River flowing down to a small harbour nearby. Inland, streets spread in suburban loops, crossed by Interstate 95, the Merritt-Wilbur Cross corridor and the rail line to New York.
